The moated castle route leads along the edge of the Eifel and the Kölner Buch through the region with the highest number of moated castles in Europe on a slope of approximately 380 km.
Discover the charming landscape of the Eifel, the Jülich Börde and the Rhenish Bay with its numerous cultural treasures by bike. In no other region are there so many moated castles in such a small area as in the city triangle of Aachen, Cologne and Bonn: you can cycle past more than 120 castles and palaces that have almost no slope. The large number of moated castles and palaces refers to the varied history of the region, which was characterized by many conflicts during the time of dukes and knights.
The route leads through varied landscapes, along idyllic, natural stream and river valleys, through agricultural border landscapes and through beautiful low mountain ranges. In addition, there are historic city centers, numerous monasteries, mills and other cultural and historical highlights.
Other formative elements include the igneous industry and the Rhenish lignite area with its vantage points for open-pit mining and cultivated areas.
Enjoy a landscape in constant change during the bike ride.
