The Algarve is synonymous with beach holidays, rugged rock formations and mass tourism. But there is another aspect of the Algarve. Via Algarviana the hiker takes 14 well-marked day stages of up to 300 km through the partly unspoilt and hilly hinterland, past traditional villages, culturally and historically important towns such as the city of Silves, which was so important among the Moors, and varied landscapes. The path leads in about 2 weeks, used for centuries by shepherds, shepherd paths and forest roads from the idyllic town of Alcoutim near the Spanish border to the Guadiana River to the legendary Cape of St. Vincent (Cabo de São Vicente) on the Atlantic Ocean, where Europe ends and begins the vastness of the sea. However, it is also advisable to only make a few stages as day or sea day trips. Constant companions are cork oak forests, an endless sea of wild herbs, rockrose and almond, figs, olive and strawberry trees and, not least, rare animal and plant species.
