The border between German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland - the Röstigraben - is also a cultural border and the point of contention in all discussions about Swiss identity. We want to hike to find out if the much-mentioned and maligned gorge really exists and how people live here. On the linguistic border path from the Jura to the Matterhorn, not only interesting encounters await us on the left and right of the Röstigraben, but also little-known landscapes. The route runs straight through Switzerland, across the Jura, through the Mittelland, into the Pre-Alps and over the Alps, from Neumühle in the Lützeltal to the foot of the Matterhorn. Along the way we encounter larger and smaller villages and towns, such as Biel/Bienne or Fribourg/Freiburg, but also lonely stretches of countryside.
The route is divided into 22 day stages. Along the way, the walking guide repeatedly points out foreground and background information, stories and history, for example the Jura village that was a free republic for four years or the holiday home settlement in Fribourg that literally collapsed one day. Of course, detailed information about hiking trails, accommodation and restaurants is provided.
