The steep limestone peaks of the Apuan Alps in far northwestern Tuscany rise almost 2,000 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is also the backdrop to most hikes.
Marble has been mined in the area for over 2,000 years and exported around the world - the Carrara Mountains are still considered the largest marble area in the world. The quarries shape people and landscape, but also mean overexploitation of nature. The vast forests and lonely valleys, the intact villages and old mule trails form the counterpoint: the Apuan Alps have been protected as a regional park for 25 years.
The hiking guide invites you to discover this alpine, contrasting and historically rich other Tuscany. 19 walks are proposed covering the entire landscape and cultural diversity: from a city walk in Carrara and a tour of the quarry arena to a six-day tour at high altitude and to mountain peaks from which one can see as far as the Alps and Corsica.
