Friesland once consisted of seven maritime countries. That fact
inspired route makers to map out the Greater Friesland Path: from the North Sea coast to across the German border.
The Groot-Frieslandpad (LAW14) crosses North Holland,
Friesland, Drenthe and Groningen up to OstFriesland.
With this special path the walker returns in time,
when the Zuiderzee did not yet exist and Friesland and North Holland formed one whole. At the time, the West Friesland region was really in the west of Friesland.
The 362 km long route runs from Bergen aan Zee to Leer through a vast landscape with stately farms,
elongated villages and winding dikes.
The route starts in Bergen aan Zee and then goes straight through West Friesland via Medemblik to Enkhuizen. There the hiker crosses the IJsselmeer and continues strolling, from Stavoren to Sneek.
The route continues its way through beautiful esdorpen in the Kop
of Drenthe and the surprising Westerwolde to finish
in German Leather. While walking the Great
Frieslandpad shows both the differences and similarities between West Friesland and Friesland. For example, cozy Zuiderzee towns can be found on both sides of the IJsselmeer, as well as mounds, dikes, meadows and farms.
But the bulb cultivation, the fields with fragrant cabbage and not to forget Radboud Castle - the only remaining castle of Count Floris V - are typically West Frisian.
