Cold War landscape, where can it be found? On the Veluwe where the largest concentration of military complexes was located - barracks, training grounds, mobilization complexes. In the IJssel Valley, at the upper reaches of the Nederrijn and Waal, where a water line was built in the 1950s against the Red Danger from the East.
Cold War landscape, how can it be recognised? Yes, on fences, on monumental barracks gates, on wide sandy paths across the heath, on inlets and bridges along the river. But also small hidden things such as a one-man bunker at the back of a garden or a lock that was of no small importance for the inundation.
Cold War landscape, can you walk in it? Part of it is inaccessible to the public, because it is still in function. You can catch a glimpse of it - all the more intriguing. Another part is simply public, because it has now been disposed of as a military site. It is quite an art to plot good walking routes in such a landscape. Certain pieces are inevitably straightforward - sometimes boring, sometimes of unforgettable grandeur. And where you as a walker would like to go straight, it says 'No Access'. But don't worry, because it is precisely there, in the shelter of the military activities, that nature cherishes its treasures.
