Bahnwanderweg Lötschberg

Since December 2007, most trains no longer run on the mountain route. The base tunnel speeds up the journey through the mountains. Reason enough to take time for the mountain line, opened in 1913, and its cultural and natural wonders. Ten newly designed trails lead adventurous hikers from the base tunnel's north portal across the north and south ramps to Brig.
Anyone who descends on the Lötschbergbahn hiking trail in the Valais walks through a Mediterranean landscape, passes old Valais houses, enjoys the unobstructed view of the Rhône Valley again and again and comes across a historic water pipe here and there. Railway enthusiasts in particular will get their money's worth: bridges and tunnels, spectacular railway routes, protective measures and energy supply installations can be visited up close.
May to October is the best time for the stage hike from Frutigen to Brig; some parts of the trail can also be hiked in winter without any problems. Many, but not all, stages are also suitable for families. And for those who don't want to walk any further, despite the basic tunnel, a train still runs once an hour in both directions.
