Because construction around the forts was not permitted, a beautiful open landscape has been created in many places along the line where nature can take its course.
The former defense lines now form the guideline for the renovated Waterliniepad. Many forts have been restored in recent decades and are now open to the public. They form an authentic backdrop for events, stopping places and nature reserves. There are flood locks and canals, dams and dikes, bunkers and forts everywhere along the route. That makes this Long-Distance Walking Path (LAW) a fascinating and varied route. Walk through old fortified towns, stroll through new nature reserves, order a snack or drink in a fort and yes, even spend the night in a bunker or depot is possible.
