Why did the Romans come to our cold, wet country about 2,000 years ago? Follow in the footsteps of the Romans and discover the answer. Walk 275 kilometers past reconstructed watchtowers and castella along the Roman Limes, admire the excavated artefacts in top museums such as the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden and Het Valkhof in Nijmegen. Learn more about the exchange of goods and culture between Romans and other peoples living in the area, such as the Batavians.

The northern border of the Roman Empire runs in the Dutch area along the Rhine (now the Oude Rijn, Leidse Rijn, Kromme Rijn and Nederrijn) from Katwijk aan Zee to Nijmegen. You walk through cities, polders, over dikes and towpaths, past forts and mills and through new nature.

This part of the Roman Limes, the largest archaeological monument in the Netherlands, has been nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
