The heart of the Apennines is still almost unknown territory north of the Alps. In Abruzzi, mainly Romans and other stressed city dwellers travel to ski, hike or swim. Eleven blue flags for excellent water quality are among the Adriatic beaches in the region, and are found nowhere else in Italy. And even the highest mountain on the boot is in Abruzzo: the mighty Gran Sasso, which dominates the entire country. Many of Abruzzo's mountains have been declared vast national parks, home to even wolves and bears.
