Far out in the Aegean, where the water sparkles deep blue, the wind god has its eternal home, and the light is brighter than anywhere else in the world, there is Greece "out of a picture book": a swarm of large and small land shards strewn between Athens and Crete, Peloponnese and Asia Minor. The Cyclades are the most central archipelago of Greece. Many more than 30 islands have been counted, some only a few square kilometers in size, 24 are inhabited. They were discovered "tourists" in the late 1960s. First it was hippies, then the backpackers who traded the Cyclades as a secret. Santorini and Mykonos are now world famous, but it is the internationally lesser known islands whose regulars return to their favorite island year after year. Eberhard Fohrer has traveled the Cyclades regularly since the early eighties, his guide providing countless tips on beaches, tourist attractions, accommodation and taverns, even off the usual routes.
