Travel guide to Northern Portugal

The sandy beaches are endless, the cities royal, the mountain worlds bizarre, the river valleys spectacular - not to mention the quality of the port wine. One of the many highlights is Porto, the old port city on the Atlantic coast, whose historic center with its exuberant art treasures has been declared a World Heritage Site. Further inland it is quieter, people follow their own rhythm far away from progress and sometimes work in the fields with mules and oxen.
Almost untouched landscapes can be found in the Gerês National Park, which offers the best opportunities for hiking.
