Where volcanoes bubbled 20 million years ago, today you will find one of the most beautiful forest and hiking areas in Germany: the Westerwald, located between the cities of Cologne, Bonn and Frankfurt. Basalt and slate characterize the hilly landscape in many places. Beautiful half-timbered villages, stately castles and many monasteries can be found here, historic tunnels and slate mines are exciting destinations for excursions. The Westerwald is best explored on foot. The most beautiful walks in this region are presented in the Rother hiking guide "Westerwald".
There is something for everyone: The rolling hills and wide valleys with their deciduous forests invite you to pleasant walks. These can often be combined with sightseeing such as beautiful villages, castles or the Marienstatt Monastery. At 657 meters, the Fuchskaute is the highest point in the Westerwald. Beautiful day trips can be made in the Lahn Valley, the Saynbach Valley and the Wied Valley. The region along the Rhine between Bonn and Koblenz, on the other hand, offers beautiful wine villages and sunny vineyards. Beautiful hiking trails can also be found in the Siebengebirge and of course in the Nassau Nature Park near Koblenz.
The walks are presented with reliable route descriptions, route maps with marked routes and informative elevation profiles. GPS tracks are also available for download. Writer and photographer Jörg-Thomas Titz knows "his" Westerwald very well. For this walking guide he has put together varied tours that always leave enough time to follow the detailed tips on sights and gastronomy.
