The Grande Traversée des Alpes (GTA) is the spectacular last part of the long-distance GR 5 trail that crosses the French Alps once. With Mont Blanc it also flanks the highest mountain in the Alps. The GTA runs from north to south parallel to the French border for almost 600 km through six mountain groups: The Chablais Alps, the Mont Blanc group, the Vanoise massif, the Thabor group, the Cottian Alps and the Maritime Alps. Each mountain group has its own character and special charm, which you can fully experience during this long-distance hike of several weeks. Over the course of the GTA, the Mediterranean climate increasingly replaces the high-alpine climate. The changes in flora, fauna and geology as a result of this climatic influence can be experienced personally during the stages. Finally, the azure blue sea is reached on the city beach of Nice.
The author provides a detailed description of the route for each stage, which is supplemented with maps, elevation profiles and GPS tracks. The book also contains important information for long-distance hikers about accommodation options, food and transportation, and information about the highlights along the route. A detailed chapter is devoted to camping and wild camping, which offers the most intensive and independent experience, as well as the greatest flexibility to experience the mountain world.
