The once barely accessible mountainous region of Abruzzo can be reached from Rome in less than two hours and yet it is one of the lesser-known travel areas in Italy. The area is extremely charming, especially for hikers. The mountain regions have been largely spared architectural evidence of leisure culture. Almost all of Abruzzo's mountains are now national parks - a density that does not exist anywhere else in Europe.
The imposing mountain ranges, which are up to 3000 meters high, offer a landscape of unique diversity. Rugged rock walls rise from exotic-looking plateaus, bare mountain peaks tower above valleys with dense beech forests, narrow ravines lead to waterfalls and lakes. Hard and grand landscapes alternate with the softer images of the hilly country of vineyards, olive groves and cornfields.
The book describes a walking tour in 15 day stages through the entire region. Along the way there are picturesque villages, lively towns and numerous places of historical interest. Special emphasis is placed on the culinary offering, with detailed descriptions of numerous restaurants along the route. In addition, background texts reveal the past and present life of the region.
